Steps to take if you can't find a job

In Covid-19 pandemic has left thousands of Americans at every job level searching for their next career move, many of whom have been in the job hunt for nearly a year. Let's evaluate your strategy and map out steps you can take if you're looking for work that excites you.

Look beyond job websites like Indeed or Monster

The digitization of the job search makes it easy to find jobs, but it's not always the most conducive to landing the job. You can tap into job boards on Indeed or Monster to identify positions that pique your interest, but falling into the trap of only applying through these portals often means you're sending the same resume to dozens of companies. Remember the importance of customizing your resume? Personalization increases your chances of passing an Application Tracking System.

Tap into your network

Often times, not every job available is listed on job boards. It takes some extra elbow grease to identify what is available. Part of that effort means tapping into your network on social media -- Linkedin, Facebook, or other professional groups you may be part of. The second part of that effort includes prioritizing regular networking opportunities. Take note of these 3 digital networking tips.

Expand your geographic search

Since the pandemic, many companies have shifted their traditional office environment to remote work for nearly all of its employees. Explore whether companies based in cities where you don't live would be open to discussing hiring you as a remote employee.

Set up informational interviews

Although this can be time intensive, setting up as many informational interviews as you can will give you direct intel from employees at companies you are interested in. You can ask about overall company goals, direction, and culture. They may be able to guide you, based on your career experience and skills, which positions to look for. Some may offer to refer you to the position when you're ready to apply. But go into this with an open mind eager to learn.

Strengthen your skills

Dedicate yourself to learning a new skills or honing ones that you already have. There are platforms out there like Coursera or Udemy that will guide you in this process. You can also choose to enroll in individual courses from places like Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, and more. Committing to self-improvement shows passion and drive, and you can showcase these accomplishments on your professional materials.

Try a temp job or volunteering

Don't rule out applying for a temp job to keep up with your financial needs. Temp jobs can be helpful as you're searching for a long-term career move, and there's a possibility it can lead you to your next full-time gig. Contact a temp agency in your area to get started. Volunteering is also a great way to gain new skills and do good for others. Many companies are inspired to hire a candidate who is dedicated to giving back to the community.
